Ensuring a Smooth Move

January 5, 2010

As we said last month, moving can be stressful for everyone involved. So it follows that anything you can do to reduce stress is a good thing. Frankly the keys to making moving less stressful lies in two words: preparation and planning.

General Moving Tips

Make a checklist as you get close to the actual moving day. That list will allow you to keep track of everything you are doing and everything that needs to get done.

Make sure your boxes aren't too big and make sure you label them with the room they're supposed to go into! Also make sure you have enough boxes, which generally means getting 25% more than you thought you needed. If the boxes are too large you'll over pack them and they will be much harder to move.

Make sure you have bags ready with the absolute necessities: these include toilet paper, any medicine, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrushes, soap, shampoo, towels, a flashlight, some extra light bulbs, snacks and drinks.

Moving Pets

Moving is stressful for pets too but there are things that can be done here as well.

  • Make sure there is a space in both homes where the pets can be alone and relax. Stock that area with toys, food, water and bedding.
  • Keep to your pet schedule as closely as possible, in other words walk and play with your pets at the same time in the new house.
  • Take plenty of water and food from the original home, changing either will result in upset stomachs and accidents.
  • If your pet is not used to leashes and pet carriers give them an opportunity to try them out in the weeks before the move.

And Lastly . . .

When you arrive at your new home:

  1. As you walk through the front door make sure you have your tool kit handy! That's to put together furniture, etc.
  2. Make sure you have a meal planned! A good meal will help everyone relax after the move – this can be as simple as take-out pizza but make sure that everyone stops to enjoy the meal.
  3. Celebrate! You survived your move.
